Mango Chamoy Cocktail
If you’re tired of plain margaritas, try this Mango Chamoy Cocktail with tequila for a margarita-like cocktail with a twist – chamoy brings a sweet, salty heat, and orange bitters add depth to the orange liqueur. You’ll need a blanco or silver tequila, mango purée, orange liqueur, chamoy, fresh lime juice, and orange bitters. Give it a whirl (it’s 5 o’clock somewhere!).
👩🏻🍳 Tamara Talks – Why a Chamoy Cocktail?
Ever since I posted a homemade chamoy recipe in June of 2020, I have loved this Mexican condiment. A month later, I used chamoy in mangonada paletas, and last month, I did a spectacular mango chamoy ice cream. I figured the logical next step would be a margarita variant like this mango chamoy cocktail.
This cocktail is essentially a margarita variant given that it includes tequila, orange liqueur, and fresh lime juice. It’s the chamoy and fresh mango that make it special. Once you have your chamoy and mango purée ready to go, this cocktail comes together in a couple of minutes! Try it with your favorite taco recipe on #TacoTuesday or any time!
📋 Ingredients Notes
Here is a quick look at the ingredients in the recipe – it’s handy to use at the grocery store or as a summary of what you need. Skip to the recipe for quantities.
- tequila – Use a clear tequila for the best visual results, blanco or silver. It doesn’t have to be “top shelf” tequila, however, keep in mind that using a better quality tequila can enhance the overall taste of your margarita. See What is Tequila for more information!
- mango purée – Living in McAllen, Texas, I can always get ripe or nearly ripe mangoes. This is not the case for everyone. I highly recommend using fresh mango purée, but if you can’t get mangoes, there are commercially available frozen mango cubes (for smoothies) and mango pulp that will work. I don’t recommend using canned.
- lime juice – Please use fresh-squeezed lime juice!
- orange liqueur – I keep triple sec on hand for both cocktails and cooking. It is perfectly fine in this chamoy cocktail. Cointreau and Grand Marnier are good substitutes if that is what you have on hand.
- chamoy – Chamoy is a popular Mexican condiment made from pickled fruit, typically apricots or plums, along with chili peppers, salt, and sugar. It has a unique sweet, tangy, and spicy flavor profile that is commonly used to add a burst of flavor to fruits, snacks, and drinks. I highly recommend my homemade chamoy recipe. If you would rather purchase chamoy, choose an all natural chamoy. Some brands do not include fruit, and have high fructose corn syrup. YUCK!🤮
- orange bitters – I love bitters, and keep a variety of them in my bar cabinet. If you omit them, you will still have a good cocktail.
- garnishes – On photo day, I did small lime wedges and cubed fresh mango (because I had an extra one). An orange twist is even simpler!

❓FAQ
No. Please look for an all-natural chamoy that includes fruit like apricots, plums, or peaches. You don’t want high fructose corn syrup and a lot of ingredients that are hard to pronounce!
You can. The flavorful ingredients will mask the harshness of a cheap tequila. However, your cocktail will shine with a better quality tequila.
💭 Top Tip
I highly recommend making cocktail ice cubes. The single ice cube is slower to dilute your cocktail than multiple ice cubes or crushed ice.
While I consider myself to be a “brown spirits” girl that loves a quality manhattan, I do make a lot of Latin-inspired food. I find tequila and pisco pair well with so many of those recipes. I hope you’ll give this complex, fruity cocktail with a hint of heat a try!

This is a really good cocktail. It’s easy to make, the ingredients are easy enough to find or make, and it tastes great. The flavors combine in a very smooth but distinctive way. I agree that making your own chamoy is the way to go .
