14 Elevated Recipes for Custard Ice Cream
A classic custard ice cream base is the foundation of these 14 Recipes for Custard Ice Cream, but the “elevated” recipes feature less common flavorings, combinations, and techniques. Have you ever tried mango chamoy ice cream or sweet corn ice cream?

Homemade custard ice cream is rich, velvety, and deeply creamy, with a luxurious texture that only an egg-yolk custard base can provide. Slow-cooked and churned to perfection, it delivers the classic flavor of old-fashioned ice cream with a silky smooth finish that melts beautifully on the tongue.

👩🏻🍳 Tamara Talks – What is Custard Ice Cream?
Custard ice cream is an exceptionally rich, smooth style of ice cream made with an egg-based custard as the foundation. Unlike Philadelphia-style ice cream, which is made from cream, milk, and sugar alone, custard ice cream incorporates egg yolks that are gently cooked with the dairy to create a velvety, luxurious texture.
🌶 From Beyond Mere Sustenance
I cannot tell a lie. Baking is terrifying to me, so you won’t find baked goods on my blog unless it is super simple. Baking is a science, and I am not qualified! Occasionally, I will start with a mix, and elevate it with spices and add-ins like I did with this Mexican trifle, or provide a simple pie crust or cookie as I did in this Peruvian alfajores recipe.
All that to say, I love ice cream recipes and frozen desserts! Playing with flavors and ingredients is sooooooo satisfying. This unique collection of custard-style ice cream recipes showcases a few of my own, as well as a few of my food blogger friends’ recipes (bottom section).

⚡Does Alcohol Improve the Texture of Custard-Style Ice Cream?
Why add alcohol? Many of my most popular ice cream and frozen dessert recipes do include alcohol. It is almost always an “optional” ingredient!
Yes, a small amount of alcohol can noticeably improve the texture of frozen custard. It lowers the freezing point of the mixture, which means less of the water freezes solid. How does it improve the custard?
Do you have to have alcohol to get the creamiest result? NOPE! Some of these delicious frozen custard do, and some don’t. If you wish to add it, all you need is 1-2 tablespoons.
More Custard Ice Cream Recipes
As I began working on this collection of ice cream recipes, I did focus on “unique” custard ice cream recipes. I discovered the selection of recipes for “Philadelphia-style ice cream” is more varied and numerous.
Why, you ask is this so? My thought process goes like this: There’s no need to adjust egg yolks, cooking temperatures, or custard thickness with the addition of fruit, liqueurs, spices, herbs, etc. with the simple mixture of cream, sugar, and flavorings. Recipe developers can experiment quickly and publish more variations.
